Applying to become a Notary Public

What to do

Individuals who wish to become a Notary Public may visit the State’s Web site at: www.nj.gov/treasury/revenue/dcr/programs/notary.html. Once at the site, if you would like to make an application for notary public, click on the link “Application for a New or Renewed Commission.” An application will appear; print the application, complete and sign it, and then forward it to one of the legislators listed below for his/her endorsement. That legislator will forward your application to the Department of Treasury, provided you enclose the following:

  • Your completed application for notary; AND
  • A stamped envelope addressed to the Department of Treasury, Notary Public Section, P.O. Box 452, Trenton, NJ 08625; AND
  • A check in the amount of $25.00 payable to Treasurer, State of New Jersey.

When you receive your approved notary public license from the State, confirming your commission, you must bring it in to the County Clerk’s Office in Newton to be administered the Notary Oath. No appointment is necessary; Contact Us for our address, regular office hours, and holiday closings schedule.

Note: The Notary Public Oath Qualification Certificate must be completed at the Clerk’s Office within three 90 days of the date of your commission. Failure to do so in the allotted time will result in cancellation of your appointment.

 

What it will cost

$15.00 to administer the Oath of Office and register your Notary Commission, payable by cash or check.

Classes for new or aspiring notaries are periodically offered at the Sussex County Community College. Check with the college for more information.
