Voting by Mail for all elections in a single calendar year
Voting by Mail in General Elections only
Civilian Voting by Mail
You may apply for a Mail-In Ballot if you are a qualified and registered voter by written application to the Sussex County Clerk’s office. The deadline for such requests is 7 days before any and all elections, e.g., Primary, General, School, etc.) Any voter who fails to apply by the deadline may apply in person to our office on any day up to 3:00 p.m. of the day before the election.
Note that anyone can vote by mail without having to state a reason for wanting to do so.
Requirements for voting by Mail-In Ballot
- You must be a registered voter of the county
- Once you apply for a mail-in ballot, you will not be permitted to vote at your polling place in the same election unless you vote a provisional ballot
What you must do
- You may download a Mail-In Ballot Application, or pick one up in person at the Clerk's Office or from your municipal clerk; AND
- Send completed application to: Sussex County Clerk, 83 Spring St., Suite 304, Newton, NJ 07860; OR
- Present the application in person at the Clerk's Office
Voting your Mail-In Ballot
- Your ballot will be mailed to you on or after the 40th day prior to Election Day; you will receive instructions with your ballot
- Your voted ballot must be received by the County Board of Elections before the close of polls on Election Day
Overseas Voting by Mail
If you are currently overseas, you may complete a mail-in ballot request, which, upon approval, will allow you to vote via regular mail, fax, or e-mail. This service is available to residents (or former residents) of Sussex County who are living or working out of the United States, including military personnel and their dependents.
Types of "Overseas" voters
- U.S. citizens living permanently overseas may vote a Federal Overseas Ballot, which allows for the voting of Federal offices including President, U.S. Senate, and Congress; whereas U.S. citizens visiting or residing temporarily overseas are eligible to vote the complete ballot of their permanent address.
What you must do
- Visit www.fvap.org and complete the appropriate overseas application, depending upon your circumstance. When you receive your ballot in the manner you requested, follow the instructions carefully and return via mail, e-mail or fax as desired. Your ballot must be mailed and received by the County Board of Elections by the close of polls on Election Day. KEEP IN MIND that if you opt to cast your ballot via email, you must have a scanner and a printer! (If emailing or faxing your ballot, your ORIGINAL ballot still must be mailed to the County Board of Elections.)
Voting by Mail for all elections in a single calendar year
Please note that as a registered voter you may request to vote by mail in all of the scheduled elections in a single calendar year.

- In completing the application, be sure to check the appropriate box, stating that you are requesting to automatically receive a mail-in ballot for each election within the remainder of the current calendar year. Please note, however, that a new application must be completed and returned to the County Clerk's Office at the beginning of each calendar year; AND
- Mail the completed application: Sussex County Clerk, 83 Spring St., Suite 304, Newton, NJ 07860.

Military Voting by Mail
If you are currently in the military service, you and your dependents, as well as patients in veteran hospitals, or civilians attached to or serving in the military may vote by mail-in ballot. (If you are in the military, serving overseas, you should complete an overseas ballot application, which will allow you to vote via regular mail, fax, or e-mail.)
Requirements for voting by mail-in ballot
- You must be a registered voter of the county, or a former resident
- Once you apply for a mail-in ballot, you will not be permitted to vote at your polling place in the same election unless you vote a provisional ballot
What you must do
- You may download a Mail-In Ballot Application from the Federal Voting Assistance Program site, or pick up an application in person at the Clerk's Office or from your local municipal clerk
- Complete the application as appropriate, depending upon your circumstance
- Send completed application to Sussex County Clerk, 83 Spring St., Suite 304, Newton, NJ 07860; OR
- Present the application in person (a family member also may apply on your behalf, but must do so in person before County Clerk staff)
Voting your mail-in ballot
- When you receive your ballot in the manner you requested, follow the instructions carefully and return via mail (or via e-mail or fax for overseas military). KEEP IN MIND that if you opt to cast your ballot via email, you must have a scanner and a printer! (If faxing or emailing your ballot, you also must mail YOUR ORIGINAL ballot to the County Board of Elections)
- Your voted ballot must be received by the County Board of Elections before the close of polls on Election Day
Voting by Mail in Every General Election
Voters who wish to vote by mail-in ballot in each and every future General Election may request that they be placed on a General Election Vote by Mail list.
Requirements for voting by mail-in ballot
- You must be a registered voter of the county
- Once you complete and return your mail-in ballot application to the County Clerk, you will not be permitted to vote at your polling place in the same election unless you vote a provisional ballot
What you must do
- You may download a Mail-In Ballot Application, or pick one up in person at the Clerk's Office or from your local municipal clerk; AND
- In completing the application, be sure to check box "B" of section 10 under Voter Options, stating that you are requesting to receive a mail-in ballot for all future November General Elections. You will then automatically be mailed a ballot for each General Election; AND
- Mail the completed application to: Sussex County Clerk, 83 Spring St., Suite 304, Newton, NJ 07860; OR
- Deliver the application in person to the County Clerk’s office.
